CNY Ride to Lembah Bujang/Merbok Archaeological Museum, 17-02-2010

On the fourth day of the CNY, seven club members including a guest from G club, Susumu san, decided to make good use of the holiday break and ride to the archaeological museum at Merbok.

The ride started at 7.30am. Stopped at Kota Kuala Muda to see the remnants of a fort built by the sultan of Kedah in the 18th century and visited the Chinese temple in Kota Kuala Muda. Reached Pantai Merdeka at 9.30am. Went to look for a boat to take us over to Tanjong Dawai across the Merbok rivermouth. Apparently we were early! The tide was out and the boat service only started at 10am. So, we had a leisurely breakfast of fried rice, iced lemon tea and fruits at the restaurant of the Pantai Merdeka resort.

Went across to Tanjong Dawai at around 10.30am. Carried our bikes and loaded them into the boat from the beach at Pantai Merdeka. It was rather cramped with seven riders and our bikes into one boat! Refilled our water bottles at Tanjong Dawai town and got batteries for the camera. We were not very sure of the route as we only had the cloudy satellite images from google for reference.

Anyway, we reached the objective safely, taking the side roads passing mangrove forests, padi fields and kampungs. The sun was merciless! We took refuge in the air-conditioned museum and took our time "examining" the exhibits on display very closely. Then we toured the ruins of an ancient Hindu temple complex that dated back to the 12th and 13th century.

The ride to the museum and back to Tanjong Dawai was about 36km. The distance from Lorong Laksamana to Pantai Merdeka was another 25km. At the end of the day, it was a very "educational excursion"- as what Susumu san very aptly summarised.
